What is the MedBEESinessHubs and why did I get involved?
I’ve had the honor of working with the MedBEESinessHubs program on a project that I’m very excited about. The official title of the program is Mediterranean Bee Hubs in support of sustainable economic prosperity in deprived rural areas. Just thought I should pop that in there to be super official…and this:
To learn more about this program, you can visit the ENI CBCMED website, the Facebook page to stay up to date, and the project page with the various Honeybee Routes.
It’s all about Bees! 🐝 This program helps in ways that might go unnoticed…like through training in their community, awarding grants and sub-grants to help small businesses offer more to entice tourism. I’ve seen a focus on education for kids and adults so they can understand the importance of bees. This is important because I was told that many people only think about how bees sting or create honey.
Through a series of workshops, festivals, and immersive educational spaces along picturesque trails, their mission is to transform the perception of bees. They aspire to enlighten people about the pivotal role bees play in our food system through pollination. And, they aim to highlight how bees contribute to a wide array of products, from candy to skincare, soap to haircare.
A great example of this is the Cyprus Honey Festival which showcases much of their efforts, bringing many producers together from Cyprus, but also, Egypt, Sardinia, Palestine, and Lebanon.
I’m impressed by how impactful programs like this can be. It’s like a spark that can ignite a movement. Put some money into a cause and watch as governments, communities, and tourism boards see the potential and start to help as well.
Surprising Things to Do in Cyprus
Visit the Environmental Information Centre of Larnaka Mountainous Area
The Environmental Information Centre of Larnaka Mountainous Area isn’t just a museum; it’s an interactive journey into the heart of rural Larnaka.
Exploring the exhibits, I’m drawn into the geology and geography that define this remarkable region. It’s like peeling back the layers of nature’s history book. Of course, they also highlight beekeeping and its importance in the region.
You’ll also uncover the vibrant local traditions that have thrived in these mountains. The artistry of silverwork and embroidery tells a compelling story, providing a glimpse into the deep cultural roots of this region.
It’s a perfect spot to start your journey into this area, so you’ll know what to look for, and where to look.
Walk The Humming Bee Natural Trail in Vavatsinia

Allow me to introduce you to the Vavatsinia Honeybee Trail, known as ‘The Humming of the Bees.’ It’s the very first of Larnaka’s Honeybee Nature Trails, and I can’t wait to share this experience with you.
Picture yourself surrounded by the majestic mountains, as you take a leisurely stroll along this winding trail. It’s as if nature herself is your guide, leading you through this picturesque environment.
But what truly makes this trail special is its focus on the therapeutic power of bees. As you walk, you’ll discover the secrets of bee-friendly plants and bee ‘hotels’ that dot the path.
Now, here’s the real magic – the soothing hum of the bees. The gentle buzz of these incredible pollinators has an almost meditative effect, washing away worries and reconnecting you with the tranquility of the natural world. Are you game to try? Check out the trails here.
Visit the Modern Honey Farm in Melini “Oros Maxaira”

You’ll definitely want to visit “Oros Maxaira,” a modern honey farm nestled in the charming village of Melini. Here, the owners are filled with enthusiasm, centered around the fascinating world of beekeeping.
What sets this bee-themed center apart are the hands-on experiences, workshops, and events that bring the world of bees to life. One of the standout activities is the Beeswax Wrap Making Workshop, where you’ll learn the art of crafting eco-friendly and sustainable wraps for your food.
But that’s just the beginning. You can even immerse yourself in the therapeutic benefits of bee therapy, where you can also participate in inhalation therapy, breathing air directly from the hive.
For the adventurous at heart, there’s an opportunity to venture into the beehives with an expert. It’s a thrilling and educational experience that allows you to witness the inner workings of these remarkable colonies up close.
“Oros Maxaira” is not just a honey farm; it’s a hive of activity and learning, driven by the passion of young entrepreneurs. It’s a place where you can roll up your sleeves, engage with bees, and discover the magic of beekeeping in a hands-on and truly immersive way.
Learn About Bees in Odou Village

Odou Village lies along one of the honeybee trails available in this region and, wow, it’s such a cute little village. Follow the path to learn about the types of bees, see what a bee hotel looks like, and get some incredible viewpoints from impressive bee-themed furniture!
While exploring the trail, make sure to stop by the village square, where you can savor traditional treats highlighted by the local honey. Remember, good things come in small packages, and that’s definitely true for this village.
Step Into History at the Bee & Embroidery Museum in Kato Drys

In the heart of Kato Drys, a Cypriot honey village, I found the Bee & Embroidery Museum, a hidden gem showcasing local history, culture, and beekeeping. They’ve won multiple gold awards at the London Honey Awards highlighting their commitment to quality honey.
The museum’s pollinator garden is a crucial sanctuary for honeybees while being a lovely place to hang out.
Beyond beekeeping, the museum offers an array of their own wine, almonds, grapes, and spirits. Step inside, and you can explore the rich history of the 300-year-old home through multiple rooms, each dedicated to showcasing a different piece of the past. From cozy bedrooms to rustic kitchens, and even a dedicated room tracing the history of beekeeping in the area, it’s a must-visit spot that beautifully celebrates culture, nature, and history in Cyprus.
Discover the Ecophysis Bee & Nature Center in Vavla
In the village of Vavla, you’ll find the Ecophysis Bee & Nature Center. And they’ve got a bunch of cool activities all centered around bees and the environment. You can dive into interactive exhibits, join guided nature walks, and really get to know these amazing pollinators and how they fit into the ecosystem.
One standout experience that you’ll want to check out is the “Become A Beekeeper for A Day” workshop. It’s hands-on, and you get to suit up like a real beekeeper and work side by side with the experts. It’s not just educational; it’s an adventure that lets you step into the world of bees in the most engaging way – a memory you won’t soon forget!
Experience Hospitality in Vavla Honey Village

My time in Cyprus was made extra special by my visit to “Our House,” an agrotourism haven lovingly managed by the delightful George & Donna Marie Pavlou. It felt more like visiting friends than visiting a B&B.
One of the highlights was the lunch prepared with locally sourced ingredients, including the rich honey that Cyprus is known for. Each dish was a savory tribute to Cypriot gastronomy, a true destination for any foodie.
I was treated to a loukoumades demonstration, mostly because I have an unhealthy obsession with them. It was a hands-on experience that revealed the secrets of how Donna Marie makes these little balls of perfection.
This charming village, home to just 18 residents, is a historical treasure trove. Wandering its narrow cobblestone streets, exploring its ancient churches, and soaking up its cultural heritage was an absolute joy. Learn more about the Honey Villages.
Get Creative at Layia Village Crafts in Lageia
Not far from Vavla, I found Layia Village Crafts and had the pleasure of meeting Peter who has wholeheartedly devoted himself to the well-being of bees. He is one of those unsung heroes of the bee world who often go unnoticed, but his contribution to pollination is invaluable.
If you have the chance to wander through the village, you’ll notice the bee-friendly plants and bee hotels scattered around. But what exactly are solitary bees, and what do these bee hotels offer?
Solitary bees, unlike their more social counterparts, lead independent lives. They don’t form colonies. Instead, each female bee takes on the task of creating her own nest. These solitary bees play a crucial role in pollination, diligently visiting flowers to gather nectar and pollen for their offspring. I didn’t know any of this, did you?
Bee hotels, on the other hand, are cozy sanctuaries for these solitary bees. These man-made structures provide solitary bees with a safe place to lay their eggs and nurture their young. Each tiny “room” within the hotel offers a welcoming space for a solitary bee to create her nest, ensuring the survival of these essential pollinators.
Visitors to Layia Village Crafts may even have the chance to get hands-on and creative. Activities like crafting your own bee hotel or painting bees on glass not only engage you but also deepen your connection to the world of bees.
Enjoy Honey Festivals

Cyprus’ honey festivals are a true celebration of the island’s beekeeping heritage. Held in various honey villages throughout the year, these festivals offer an opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of bees and their products. You can usually find the festivals listed here.
From golden honey to beeswax creations and more, these gatherings showcase the diverse offerings from local beekeepers. The annual honey festival in the Old Port of Limassol is a grand extravaganza, bringing together producers from across Cyprus to highlight the rich tapestry of bee-related products. It’s a sweet symphony of flavors and craftsmanship that you won’t want to miss when visiting this enchanting island.

How You Can Make a Difference
Bees play an irreplaceable role in our ecosystem, and there are numerous ways you can actively contribute to their well-being and conservation. Here are some meaningful steps you can take to support these essential pollinators:
Craft a Pollinator’s Paradise: Whether you have a spacious backyard or a cozy balcony, why not transform a corner of your outdoor space into a haven for bees? Plant an array of vibrant flowers, aromatic herbs, and lush shrubs that bees simply adore. It’s like creating a floral buffet to keep them nourished and happy.
Build a Bee Hotel: These cozy little inns for solitary bees, offer a snug spot for them to lay their eggs and nurture their offspring. Crafting your own bee hotel is a fun DIY project that can be a real treat for these precious pollinators.
Join Beekeeping Workshops: Consider enrolling in local beekeeping workshops and educational programs. These hands-on experiences not only deepen your understanding of beekeeping but also forge a more profound connection with these incredible creatures.
Embark on Bee Tourism Adventures: If you’re a fan of travel and adventure, why not explore destinations that celebrate bee tourism, such as the Honey Bee Trails and Honey Villages? These experiences allow you to dive into the world of bees, learn about beekeeping, and revel in the beauty of nature.
Support Local Beekeepers: Whenever you can, buy honey and bee-related products from local beekeepers. By doing so, you’re not only savoring delicious, locally-sourced goodies but also directly supporting the sustainability of beekeeping.
Avoid Pesticides: If you have a garden, consider using bee-friendly, organic practices that minimize pesticide use. Encourage your community to adopt eco-conscious farming methods that protect our buzzing buddies.
Back Bee-Friendly Businesses: Support businesses that prioritize bees and the environment. Seek out products and brands that are committed to sustainable practices and habitat preservation.
Financially Support Bee Initiatives: Contribute to organizations and initiatives dedicated to bee conservation and research. Your financial backing can help fund projects that directly benefit bee populations.
By doing any number of these, you become an integral part of the effort to safeguard bees and secure their vital role in our environment and food production. Remember, every little bit counts, and together, we can make a world of difference for our bee buddies!
Bee-friendly plants
As I mentioned, even small things can make a big impact, especially, if we all do our part. Try planting a few plants to help the bees. And here are some options I think you’ll love!
- Basil
- Thyme
- Rosemary
- Oregano
- Sage
- Lavender
- Laurel
- Marigold
- Chrysanthemum

Workshops, festivals, and educational spaces along the trails aim to shift the narrative, showcasing the importance of bees beyond honey production. The Cyprus Honey Festival, in particular, is a testament to how this program brings together numerous producers to highlight the incredible bounty bees provide.
