A Guide to Bee Tourism in Egypt

Egypt has a rich history and natural beauty, but I recently had the chance to explore a hidden gem that not many tourists know about – the thriving beekeeping scene. Egypt’s story goes beyond pyramids and pharaohs; it’s a tale of hardworking bees that play a vital role in local economies and agriculture.

This post is sponsored by MedBEESinessHubs, an EU-funded project, however, all opinions are my own.

I was able to visit thanks to a European Union-funded project called MedBEESinessHubs. This initiative is changing the game in beekeeping and sustainability, not just in Egypt but throughout the Mediterranean region.

What is the MedBEESinessHubs and why did I get involved?

I’ve had the honor of working with the MedBEESinessHubs program on a project that I’m very excited about. The official title of the program is Mediterranean Bee Hubs in support of sustainable economic prosperity in deprived rural areas. Just thought I should pop that in there to be super official…and this:

To learn more about this program, you can visit the ENI CBCMED website, the Facebook page to stay up to date, and the project page with the various Honeybee Routes.

Come along as I introduce you to small businesses making a big difference, their innovative projects, and the path toward a more sustainable future for both bees and our local communities. Of course, I’ll share the easiest way for you to do this, too.

This honey bee trail is called Ra’s Tears because, in ancient Egypt, honey bees were believed to rise from the Tears of the Sun god Ra, which transformed into bees upon touching the earth, providing the people with precious honey. And beekeeping in Egypt dates back to around 3100 BC, with early beekeepers using clay or mud pipes to house their hives. Bees have been found in hieroglyphics!

So, yeah, you might not think of Egypt when you think of bees, but maybe you should…

Memorable Activities in Egypt

Golden Bee Land

As I started exploring Egypt’s beekeeping treasures, I visited a charming spot known as Golden Bee Land. This isn’t your typical tourist attraction; it’s a colorful outdoor educational center primarily designed for children, although adults can certainly join in on the fun.

Golden Bee Land is where learning about bees is an unforgettable adventure. Children can wear the cutest bee suits and immerse themselves in the world of these tiny pollinators. But don’t be fooled; adults are also welcome to take part in the beekeeping lessons, making it a family-friendly experience. Somehow these bees are pretty relaxed, so don’t be scared. I think you’ll love the experience of getting all suited up to explore the hives.

One of the highlights of this space is the opportunity to savor local honey in a variety of forms. Whether you’re sipping on cold drinks infused with honey, indulging in freshly made honey-based treats, or shopping for unique local gifts inspired by bees, you’ll find a cornucopia of bee-related products.

It’s a sweet journey that leaves both young and young-at-heart with a newfound appreciation for the world of bees. I know I had a blast!

The Young Beekeeper @ Younes Honey Apiary

As I continued my journey through Egypt, I stumbled upon another gem that left a lasting impression – The Young Beekeeper. It’s not your average farm; it’s a educational space that offers an escape from Alexandria’s hustle and bustle. Imagine a colorful space adorned with date trees, abundant shaded spots, and a warm invitation to indulge in snacks and drinks while you explore.

The Young Beekeeper, is part of Younis Honey Apiary, founded by three siblings with a deep commitment to passing down their beekeeping wisdom to the younger generation. This place is nothing short of inspiring. They firmly believe that children and youth are the future stewards of our environment, and they’ve created something remarkable to help that along.

What sets The Young Beekeeper apart are its hands-on workshops. These sessions use a creative mix of tools, from handouts and games to video tutorials and coloring cards, making learning about beekeeping a genuinely enjoyable adventure. It’s an engaging experience that captivates all ages. The MedBEESiness program was integral in the creation of an educational video…that had me fascinated. (There are English subtitles, so no worries ;))

Through every experience with bees, I learned something new, and a visit to The Young Beekeeper was no exception. So, if you ever find yourself in Egypt, consider a visit to Younis Honey Apiary.
