A decade. 10 years. It can feel like a long time or such a short time depending on your life. Sean wrote why he travels and I wrote a post on it as well, but 10 years ago our travel story began. And it is amazing what can happen in 10 years!
In the college where we studied, there is a 2 week course in January to Europe with one of my favorite professors. I had been to Europe twice before, once with my grandparents, and once with my mother, but this was an opportunity to go to Europe with my friends and get college credit! Win-win.
I begged Sean to go and luckily, he was able to join the fun. We had only been together for 5 months at this point, and while traveling with a group can be stressful, traveling with your boyfriend can be difficult if you don’t see eye-to-eye. But we meshed very well and had a great trip! (Obviously since we are married now!)
That trip is where Sean caught the travel bug and he didn’t stop talking about going back to London for YEARS. I am not exaggerating. You can ask him. He did eventually travel to London again for work, and again for an interview when we moved to Amsterdam. But it just goes to show that one trip can change your life and can solidify a relationship.
This two week college trip to Austria, Germany, and England put into motion Sean getting his Italian citizenship, and us eventually moving to Amsterdam. You never know where the road might take you. Let circumstances change you. There could be some amazing paths that come out of them.
The funny thing about looking back on that trip is how different traveling was for us. We didn’t have Google Maps on our phones and I certainly didn’t have a sim card I could use abroad. So, we got lost…a couple times, but it made the experience so much more interesting. We have grown together, we have grown as adults, and we have grown as travelers.
In 2014 our dream of moving to Europe came true, and in 2015 we hope to travel more around this great cluster of countries that surrounds us!
