When we made our list of 5 goals to accomplish each month, it was so that we keep exploring and we don’t just let our lives pass us by. Now that we are one month into these goals, we want to show you how the challenge is going. The city of Amsterdam is amazing and we enjoy sharing all of that with you as we let you into our lives as expats.
We found a great restaurant/bar not too far from home called Cafe Struik. It’s near Boom Chicago, so if you are ever heading there for a show, you should check this place out on the way. They have a full bar and a menu that’s a nice step above a bar menu. Our server was very nice and was happy to chat about what was good, so we ended up getting burgers which were so surprisingly good. Will definitely go back!
The Library! Ok ok, I know how that sounds, but it’s not a library with books. The Library is a part of many wineries where they have their best vintage, their awards, and their prized pieces. Clever folks, huh? So when I say I’m going to a tasting at The Library, I have to explain why…and now you know too! I will say that it’s not technically a wine bar. It’s a wine boutique with some wines available to taste. But they have different events and different kinds of tastings, so it feels like a wine bar. It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite places in the city! You might find it as a Friday Favorite soon…
This still isn’t a strong suit of ours…just to go walking around a neighborhood. But one area we’ve been frequenting is the Haarlemmerbuurt area, but mostly the main streets of Haarlemmerdijk and Haarlemmerstraat. It’s to the west of Centraal Station and has great shops, cafes, sweet treats, grocery stores, and restaurants in this area. We spent part of our Valentine’s Day at Ibericus on Haarlemmerstraat and walked around afterwards. The closer you get to Centraal Station, the more coffeeshops you see and smell, and the more tourists there are. But it’s really a great area with a great variety to browse.
Tacos and Tequila Night with Yelp! So.Much.Fun. When Yelp hosts an event, you know it’s going to be good. The Taco Gallery is a restaurant that is currently without a home, she’s looking for a spot in Amsterdam and we are hoping she finds one as close to our home as possible. I am glad you could have as many tacos as you could eat, I’m just sorry I couldn’t eat more! And the homemade margaritas…oh man…so good. We are looking forward to seeing this restaurant open, but for now we’ll keep visiting her booth at different markets!
One of the big reasons we are happy we live in Amsterdam is accessibility to so many amazing places. Of course, we thought that just meant being close to Centraal Station and having a major airport in our city, but it also means that amazing places are just outside of the city! We’d heard about the Zaanse Schans but still didn’t know what to expect. But a quick 40 minute bus ride later and we were staring at beautiful, colorful, and old windmills. I was so happy to see them spinning! Sometimes I think that our fancy electronics are amazing, but then after watching a video on how they used wind power to cut wood over 100 years ago, I’m in awe.
It was a good month to explore and I’m glad we got it all in! We went to other restaurants and such, but for now, we just share the highlights. I’m on Yelp if you want to find my favorite spots! There is so much to love here and this is a fun way for us to look back at what we’ve found and maybe you’ll find a gem too.
Have you found a great new spot where you live? Go look for one!
