Liebster Award

Liebster Award

Big thanks to Jessica Lipowski for nominating me for the Liebster Award! I am honored you thought of me and am looking forward to answering your questions. I really enjoyed reading through the answers from questions you were given. Great getting to know you!

What is the Liebster Award?

It’s a fun way to recognize up-and-coming bloggers. You learn more about bloggers outside of what they would normally write. So, you’ll find questions about the author and about the blog so you get a sense of who’s behind the screen. Then they nominate other bloggers for the award!

Rules:
  1. Someone nominates you for the award and asks you to answer 11 questions.
  2. You answer the questions.
  3. You create 11 new questions and nominate five or more other bloggers to answer them.

Here are the questions posed to me from Jessica Lipowski:
Why did you initially start your blog?

In 2013, we were taking a 2 week trip to Europe and I wanted to document it. I also have a personal blog that keeps friends and family up to date on various happenings, but I wanted something travel related. An all-in-one-place kind of thing. I follow other travel bloggers  and wanted to see if I could keep writing regularly while posting pictures, and sharing our experiences. I love having these memories to look back on!

Who or what instilled the travel bug in you?

When I was 16 years old, my grandparents took me on a two week river cruise through Europe that started in Vienna, Austria and ended in Amsterdam, Netherlands. After seeing how so many others live, I knew that I could never go back to living in the bubble I had been in. I wanted to see more. I wanted to know more.

Do you have a song that you always listen to before setting out on the road? If so, what is the song and why is it special?

Not really. I do like upbeat things, but my husband is much better at music selection than I am!

When you are traveling, what do you miss most from home?

I am happy traveling and I have never gotten homesick…even when I went to college. I sometimes miss familiar surroundings, though.

What is the most exotic food you’ve ever eaten? Where did you try it? Would you eat it again?

Probably Ox heart thanks to Andrew Zimmern. He did a presentation at the Travel and Adventure Show in D.C. and he had us try some interesting things. I am a very picky eater, so everything shocked me there. I might try it again since it wasn’t that bad.

What is the best beverage or drink you have tried abroad? For instance, a particular type of coffee, tea, liquor, cocktail, etc.

The Asian Pearl is the best cocktail I’ve had. It’s from the Sky Lounge in Amsterdam. But I think it’s on a rotating menu, so I’m not even sure if it’s still there!

While you are home – not traveling – how do you keep your travel memories alive?

Our blog along with some videos, but we also try to find a piece of artwork to take home with us as well as a Christmas ornament. So, each Christmas we think back to how to got each piece.

Share one of your favorite travel quotes and why it resonates with you.

“The world is a book and those who do not travel only read the first page.” – Saint Augustine

I want to become a world citizen and you can’t do that without understanding that there is a huge world that thinks and lives differently than you. People celebrate different holidays with different religions. They eat different kinds of meals with ingredients you have never heard of and have struggles that you can’t imagine. I want to know as much as I can about how the rest of the world lives. This quote is so important to me that my intern made with a canvas art piece with it painted on it

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned from your parents?

To think ahead and be realistic. While this helps be examine all sides of a situation and plan as much as possible, sometimes it is also worth taking a leap of faith!

What are you most proud of in your life so far?

Having the strength to leave everyone and everything I know to move to Amsterdam! It was so scary, and with all the planning, things go wrong. I’m proud that we didn’t give up and we are truly loving life.

Where in the world are you headed next?

The next big trip will be Italy…which isn’t a huge trip anymore! We’ll be visiting Dutch cities throughout the summer while the weather is nice and visit Italy in the early autumn. Very excited to try some real Italian food!
